Dosage/Direction for Use

Combination therapy in patients whose BP is not adequately controlled w/ monotherapy 80 mg/12.5 mg or 160 mg/12.5 mg once daily. Patient whose BP is inadequately controlled or is controlled but experiences hypokalemia 80 mg/12.5 mg or 160 mg/12.5 mg once daily.

Administration

May be taken with or without food.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity. Anuria. Sulfonamide-derived drugs.

Special Precautions

Perform periodic serum electrolyte determination to detect possible electrolyte imbalance. Valsartan: Hepatic impairment, cirrhosis or biliary obstruction. Pregnancy. Hydrochlorothiazide: Existing fluid & electrolyte disturbances; hypokalemia; hyponatremia; Addison's disease; renal impairment. May precipitate attacks of gout. May cause hyperglycemia & aggravate or unmask DM. Mild hypercalcemia.

Adverse Reactions

Headache, dizziness, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting. Valsartan: Vertigo, fatigue, abdominal pain, muscle cramps, dry cough, hypotension, pruritus, rash, impotence. Hydrochlorothiazide: Electrolyte imbalance; anorexia, gastric irritation, sialadenitis, photosensitivity reactions, orthostatic hypotension, paraesthesia & yellow vision.

Drug Interactions

Hydrochlorothiazide: Potentiation of orthostatic hypotension w/ alcohol, barbiturates or narcotics. Antidiabetics. Additive effects or potentiation w/ other hypertensives. Impaired absorption w/ cholestyramine & colestipol resins. Intensified electrolyte depletion w/ corticosteroids, ACTH. Possible increased responsiveness to the muscle relaxant w/ tubocurarine. Reduced diuretic, natriuretic & antihypertensive effects of loop, K-sparing & thiazide diuretics w/ NSAIDs.
